Slash Your Energy Costs … Focus on Your Core Business … Bring $$$ to Your Bottom Line through New Strategic Energy Management & Training Solutions

Proven strategies to sharply reduce energy expenditures through no-cost and low-cost energy conservation measures, innovative training methods and “turn-key” implementation solutions

From: Marlon McClinton, President & CEO, Utilivate Technologies, LLC

Dear Prospective Client,

The general economic downturn in the United States in recent years has put great pressure on schools, businesses, not-for-profit organizations, and government agencies throughout the country. While some organizations have prospered during this period, most have had to severely scale back operating expenses, even laying off and releasing employees. Unfortunately, during this period, many businesses have discontinued operations because of lingering economic hardships.
Most organizations are not fully aware of the significant role, contribution, and impact of energy on overall operating costs; whether in the service, manufacturing, or industrial sectors. By effectively managing energy costs, there is a great opportunity to improve the “bottom line” of businesses and, in turn, their viability and profitability.

Most staff, responsible for operations, have little experience and few skills to effectively manage, control, and reduce energy expenses. There is a great opportunity for organizations to utilize strategic energy management services and highly targeted energy management training as a means to decrease energy expenditures by up to 30%. The opportunity to reduce energy costs is enhanced by Utilivate’s follow-up implementation support.

A Solid Record of Performance

Utilivate staffs have worked with executive management on retail energy strategy, large commercial and industrial portfolio energy management, and technology applications in order to best achieve business objectives. In addition, Utilivate has worked with some of the largest educational systems in the United States in providing its strategic energy management services.

Utilivate’s unique approach is to actively engage all stakeholders in crafting a comprehensive energy management plan: The “Whole Enterprise” approach to strategic energy management.

Case Study #1 – The Chicago Public Schools

Methodology

Utilivate’s energy professionals performed an energy audit on a public school with a student enrollment of 400. The school had an annual energy spend of approximately $100,000; however, the cost has varied dramatically over the past several years.

Utilivate employed its “Whole Enterprise” approach to energy management using site surveys, extensive personal interviews, and equipment inspection.

Outcomes/Results

The Utilivate Network’s “Whole Enterprise™” energy management approach identified total savings of between $30,000 to $45,000 (30% - 45%). These savings had the potential to be replicated across several hundred buildings of the broader public school system.

Further, it was discovered that at least 30% of these savings (9% - 14%) could be achieved from low-cost and no-cost initiatives. Specific low-cost and no-cost opportunities included:

  • “Whole Enterprise” Energy Awareness Campaign (technician training, monitoring and targeting, student/teacher programs, and cost performance recognition/accountability)

  • Improved preventative maintenance program

  • Review of energy rates

  • Tighter building controls

Case Study #2 – Fortune 1000 Company

Methodology

A Fortune 1000 company successfully applied Utilivate’s “Whole Enterprise” approach to strategic energy management to its extensive administrative and office facilities.

Utilivate’s energy experts, through personal interviews with key staff at all organizational levels, analysis of energy usage data, and onsite facility visits, completed its proprietary Performance-Grade™ Energy Audit and Strategic Energy Plan for the corporation.

Outcomes/Results

Utilivate staff, working with the corporate energy team, identified annual savings exceeding $1,000,000 or 30% of total energy spend; approximately 9% of these savings could be achieved from low-cost and no-cost initiatives.

Specific low-cost and no-cost opportunities included:

  • “Whole Enterprise” Energy Awareness Campaign

  • Improved building controls

  • Use of motion sensors at strategic locations in the facility

  • Optimizing the use of energy information & competitive supply purchases

The Solution

The above case studies were implemented using Utilivate’s unique “Whole Enterprise” approach to strategic energy management. Utilivate’s approach engages all stakeholders in the energy management enterprise. All of our clients have experienced sharp reductions in their energy expenditures allowing real dollars to be transferred to their core business or organizational activities.

Utilivate’s strategic energy management approach can be applied to the whole business enterprise or to a single facility.

Below is an overview of Utilivate’s “Whole Enterprise” approach to strategic energy management:

Establish Strategic Intent & Vision of Strategic Energy Management Initiative

Utilivate will work with your staff to establish the strategic intent, vision, and ideal outcomes of the energy management initiative. Importantly, Utilivate will work with your team to clearly define the project scope (for example, number of facilities targeted and geographic regions).

Establish Performance Baseline

Utilivate will establish the physical and operating characteristics of each facility to be addressed and, further, establish the energy usage baseline for the past three years. Utilivate will tap its database to establish energy performance bench marks for similar industries/facilities.

Determine Stakeholder Roles & Responsibilities

Utilivate will work with your team to identify all stakeholders who have responsibilities for energy management policy, implementation, tracking and performance, communication, and capital investment decisions. Utilivate will define the role, responsibilities, interests, and relative priority of each stakeholder in achieving energy conservation goals.

Determine Current Energy Performance Using Energy Management Matrix

Utilivate will conduct personal interviews and/or focus group sessions with all pertinent stakeholders in order to improve current energy performance in the areas of energy policy, information collection, internal communication, energy supply, energy utilization, etc. Utilivate will identify external and internal environmental factors that act as barriers to successful program implementation.

The Strategic Energy Management Plan

Utilivate will craft a strategic energy management plan customized for each facility that significantly improves overall energy conservation performance. The Strategic Energy Management Plan will help “close the gap” between current and targeted performance. The Strategic Energy Management Plan will have the following components:

  • Clarification of company’s strategic intent, vision, and goals, especially as they relates to energy management

  • Business overview

  • Baseline assessment

  • Current energy management performance

  • Strategic energy management actions: “Closing the Gap”

  • Financial impact assessment (cost/benefit analysis)

  • Strategic energy management roadmap (including migration strategies)

  • Executive Formal Statement of Commitment

Strategic Energy Management Operational/Action Plan

Utilivate will craft detailed operation/action plans for all programs and projects identified as part of the strategic energy management roadmap. Operational plans will define budgets, resource allocation, time frame for implementation, and milestones. The overall strategic energy management plan addresses the key areas of energy data and information, energy supply management, energy utilization, and energy asset management.

Following are the broad areas which are expected to require operational plans:

  • Energy policy

  • Energy awareness program

  • Program to track, monitor, and report on energy utilization

  • Energy management committee formation and operation

  • Balanced scorecard/recognition and reward programs for appropriate stakeholders

  • Training programs for building engineers (preventive and corrective maintenance)

  • “Low Cost/No Cost” energy conservation measures

  • Capital spending initiatives

  • School curriculum recommendations (for educational institutions)

Strategic Energy Planning Workshop

Utilivate provides comprehensive training of energy managers and operating personnel to develop their energy plans in-house. Utilivate’s Strategic Energy Planning Workshop program is licensed from GEM Management Consultant, Inc.

The "Strategic Energy Planning Workshop" process was developed based on interactions with over 1000 customers. This process is designed to help Energy Managers and other facility professionals whose responsibilities include developing and implementing a comprehensive and sustainable energy management program for their organizations.

The workshop recognizes that a successful program must integrate energy planning with other critical planning activities. Workshop participants will gain a better understanding of the ways in which accountability for results, establishment of meaningful measures and goals, a commitment to regular review, and the personal endorsement of senior leadership are all critical ingredients for an effective energy management program. Participants will leave the workshop armed with powerful new tools they can apply right away to more effectively guide their organization toward achieving optimum and sustained long-term energy savings.
